Actually, researchers are studying substances that may improve mental abilities. These substances are called “cognitive enhancers” or “smart drugs” or “nootropics.” (“Nootropic” comes from Greek – “noos” = mind and “tropos” = changed, toward, turn). The supposed effects of cognitive enhancement can be several things. For example, it could mean improvement of memory, learning, attention, concentration, problem solving, reasoning, social skills, decision making and planning.

If taken properly, 5-HTP has shown a wide range of positive health benefits such as promoting weight loss by curbing appetite, decreasing night terrors, as well as helping to address a host of digestive issues such as IBS and Leaky Gut Syndrome. 5-HTP is thought to be directly converted into 5-HT (Serotonin) by enzymatic processes, thus making more Serotonin available to the body. So the expected value is greater than the NPV cost of taking it, so I should start taking iodine.

My aim in this post is not to demonstrate that piracetam can’t benefit anyone or that you will certainly suffer harm by taking it, since some people can benefit from it and most people will probably experience little to no harm if it’s taken on a short term basis.

The word “nootropic” was coined in 1972 by a Romanian scientist, Corneliu Giurgea, who combined the Greek words for “mind” and “bending.” Caffeine and nicotine can be considered mild nootropics, while prescription Ritalin, Adderall and Provigil (modafinil, a drug for treating narcolepsy) lie at the far end of the spectrum when prescribed off-label as cognitive enhancers. Even microdosing of LSD is increasingly viewed as a means to greater productivity.

Much study time is wasted by distractions like talking to friends, playing computer games, or watching TV. Think about your last study period. How long did you try to study (time from beginning to end)? How much of that time was actually spent studying? If there is a big discrepancy in your response to these two questions, you may want to explore another study location with fewer distractions. The result may be that it actually takes you less time to accomplish the same amount of work because you are able to stay focused in another environment more easily. Another source of distractions may be personal concerns, which can be more difficult to control. If you find that this is your greatest study distraction, you may wish to talk with a counselor on campus to try to find ways to reduce or resolve your personal concerns.

We’ve talk about how caffeine affects the body in great detail, but the basic idea is that it can improve your motivation and focus by increasing catecholamine signaling. Its effects can be dampened over time, however, as you start to build a caffeine tolerance. Research on L-theanine, a common amino acid, suggests it promotes neuronal health and can decrease the incidence of cold and flu symptoms by strengthening the immune system. And one study, published in the journal Biological Psychology, found that L-theanine reduces psychological and physiological stress responses—which is why it’s often taken with caffeine. In fact, in a 2014 systematic review of 11 different studies, published in the journal Nutrition Review, researchers found that use of caffeine in combination with L-theanine promoted alertness, task switching, and attention. The reviewers note the effects are most pronounced during the first two hours post-dose, and they also point out that caffeine is the major player here, since larger caffeine doses were found to have more of an effect than larger doses of L-theanine.
The exact method by which piracetam increases cerebral circulation is not completely documented, but some believe it enhances blood flow, at least in part, by promoting the production of red blood cells and at the same time reducing their tendency to adhere to cell walls. Piracetam has also been shown to have a positive effect on brain metabolism, causing the brain cells to use oxygen and nutrients more rapidly and effectively. This is turn creates a higher demand, which may play a role in triggering increased cerebral circulation.

I find this very troubling. The magnesium supplementation was harmful enough to do a lot of cumulative damage over the months involved (I could have done a lot of writing September 2013 – June 2014), but not so blatantly harmful enough as to be noticeable without a randomized blind self-experiment or at least systematic data collection – neither of which are common among people who would be supplementing magnesium I would much prefer it if my magnesium overdose had come with visible harm (such as waking up in the middle of the night after a nightmare soaked in sweat), since then I’d know quickly and surely, as would anyone else taking magnesium. But the harm I observed in my data? For all I know, that could be affecting every user of magnesium supplements! How would we know otherwise?

Do you know if piracetam side effects vanish in time or is it life long? I only took 2g three times daily for a month as well as a 8g mega dose which killed me completely. Also, I felt as if blood was rushing through my brain. Is that a typical effect of piracetam? Is it bad? Cuz right after that effect the brain fog came. As if my neurons were destroyed or something.
