tried Piracetam years ago at a dose of 800 mg twice per day for one week. I felt fantastic at first. Far more social, funny…damn right charming!! Then after about a week, I crashed. Felt sluggish, irritable, anit-social and angry. I stopped taking it. About two weeks later I tried it again, and immediately felt badly. I then waited several months, and tried it again, and once again immediately felt badly. I find it interesting that after that initial euphoric week at the beginning, I have never been able to take it again successfully. What has my brain biochemically remembered? Were there permanent negative effects? Needless to say…never again.
Food Based Nootropics Piracetam (known as (2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine-acetamide) is a synthetic compound of the racetam family, and shares the characteristic 5-carbon oxopyrrolidone ring structure.[3] Piracetam was the first of the racetam family, and developed by UCB Pharma in Belgium,[4][3] and is also known as Nootropyl or UCB6215.[5] It is a nootropic compound, derived from the greek word noos (mind) and tropein (towards); ultimately meaning ‘towards the mind’.[6]
For many people who are already into nootropics and brain supplements, the Piracetam, Aniracetam, and Oxiracetam is a time-tested stack that has a lot of synergistic effects on your brain. Another fact is that all of these are pretty popular, and you can get your hands on them without much trouble.
Human research has found that this smart drug helps people recover more quickly from brain injuries, but more studies are needed to understand how it might be used as a nootropic in healthy adults (45, 46).

The best music to help stay focused when working on a task is music with a slow, regular rhythm that has no singing.  Type ‘concentration music’ into YouTube and you will find some great one hour long tracks to listen to when working on a task.  In concentration music, the chords typically change every eight seconds.  This slow chord change trains the brain to develop a longer period of focus.

Even the most tranquil setting can leave you distracted and unable to concentrate. That is because the most powerful distractions are NOT external. They come from your mind, in the form of the thousands of thoughts it generates every day.

He recommends a 10mg dose, but sublingually. He mentions COLURACETAM’s taste is more akin to that of PRAMIRACETAM than OXIRACETAM, in that it tastes absolutely vile (not a surprise), so it is impossible to double-blind a sublingual administration – even if I knew of an inactive equally-vile-tasting substitute, I’m not sure I would subject myself to it. To compensate for ingesting the coluracetam, it would make sense to double the dose to 20mg (turning the 2g into <100 doses). Whether the effects persist over multiple days is not clear; I’ll assume it does not until someone says it does, since this makes things much easier.

  7. Hi Mike. Thank you so much for this invaluable site. I started with nootropics a year ago with Neuro1 which I acquired a large volume of from a liquidator for next to nothing. My supply has run out, and rather than pay the price premium for that product, I decided to get serious about my nootropics and roll my own. Below is the list of supplements I’m using with dosages, taken TWICE daily unless otherwise stated. I would appreciate your feedback on this “mega stack”, as I’m not sure if I’ve gone a bit overboard and if some of these dosages should be scaled back due to the amount of overlapping ingredients, or if there’s anything else I should consider adding to the mix (looking for improvement across the board with memory, cognition/focus/awareness, motivation, mental/emotional wellbeing, etc).
These smart drugs are the most popular because their benefits are readily accessible by a large number of users. Because every individual’s neurochemistry is different, medications and supplements may affect each person differently.

Caffeine keeps you awake, which keeps you coding. It may also be a nootropic, increasing brain-power. Both desirable results. However, it also inhibits vitamin D receptors, and as such decreases the body’s uptake of this-much-needed-vitamin. OK, that’s not so bad, you’re not getting the maximum dose of vitamin D. So what? Well, by itself caffeine may not cause you any problems, but combined with cutting off a major source of the vitamin – the production via sunlight – you’re leaving yourself open to deficiency in double-quick time.

Mitochondrial dysfunction may have a causative role in Alzheimer’s Disease [12] [13]. One in-vitro study looked at the hippocampus membranes of Alzheimer’s patients and noted that the fluidity of these cells improved with Piracetam. [14] Findings that Piracetam may improve the fluidity of mitochondrial membranes and thus mitochondrial function have been supported in animal models of Alzheimer disease and aging. These findings may explain some of Piracetam’s cognitive effects in aging and brain dysfunctions. [15]

    A. If you start feeling bad somehow after piracetam, then your dopamine levels and the flow of it are far too high for your well-being. Then that drug is not for you. (If you have too much sugar, it is toxin for your body too, or even water.)
The evidence? Ritalin is FDA-approved to treat ADHD. It has also been shown to help patients with traumatic brain injury concentrate for longer periods, but does not improve memory in those patients, according to a 2016 meta-analysis of several trials. A study published in 2012 found that low doses of methylphenidate improved cognitive performance, including working memory, in healthy adult volunteers, but high doses impaired cognitive performance and a person’s ability to focus. (Since the brains of teens have been found to be more sensitive to the drug’s effect, it’s possible that methylphenidate in lower doses could have adverse effects on working memory and cognitive functions.)

Warning: You need to be aware that many so-called nootropics available today contain stimulants like caffeine, ephedrine, or any other psychoactive drugs that temporarily increase your alertness. They do have a powerful effect on your brain, but not necessarily positive. They do not have any long-term health benefits. The primary of these is Adderall, which is a medical drug associated with significant side effects and toxicity damage to your brain’s dopamine neurons. Certainly not what you want.
